Exmoor National Park

A 30 minute drive from Taunton, Exmoor National Park is full of rugged wilderness. Open landscapes stretch out before you, with pretty villages and little streams for those who like to explore. See one of the UK’s rare populations of wild ponies as they graze their way through the landscapes or book horse riding trips over the rolling hills. Leading down to the Bristol Channel take a picnic to one of the spotless sandy beaches or enjoy walks along the cliffs.

Minutes from the town of Taunton the Quantock Hills are an area of outstanding beauty. Hikers and mountain bikers will find plenty to enjoy in the Quantock Hills, with paths varying from tough and steep to gentle and perfect for families with children.

Blackdown Hills

Smooth, undulating hills roll out over the countryside in the Blackdown Hills, which are found to the south of Taunton. Stretching down through the East Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty to Sidmouth and Lyme Regis this area is a hikers’ and mountain bikers’ paradise. The unique environment is home to some rare flora and fauna, as well as insects, birds and mammals. Streams and springs make the ideal location for picnics and there are some places for freshwater swimming as well.

East Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty

Slightly to the south of the Blackdown Hills, the East Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty dates back 250 million years. Full of National Parks and pretty villages, amble through stunning forests of ancient trees, shaded woodlands, river valleys and coastal views which stretch over the English Channel. It’s home to many working farms, with opportunities to try delicious local produce in some of the excellent restaurants and pubs dotted through the area. The Canteen at Axminster serves up produce from the surrounding landscapes, with the market town dating back hundreds of years. Axmouth Harbour is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood from the English Channel, while the Olde Masons Arms in Branscombe serves up delicious beer from local breweries.
